Today, the Valleys are recognised as one of the most beautiful
places in the Lake District with two vibrant villages that support
the local businesses, residents and those who work in the Valleys.
This section is about their stories...both past and present.
The following extracts are from tape recordings
made with the people of Langdale during the past 26 years by Ambleside
Oral History Group. A new set of Langdale extracts will be available
every few weeks.
The archive has many recordings of the first-hand memories of
people throughout the Lake District from 1885 to the present day.
The entire archive is available to read in transcript form on
screen at Ambleside Library, or it can be listened to by request
through staff at the library. Requests for local history information
from any of the Group's interviews can be made by emailing the
Society at history@aohghistory.f9.co.uk
Our website can be found at www.aohghistory.f9.co.uk
and there are brochures and a full catalogue of interview titles
at Ambleside Library.
'I' stands for 'Interviewer'
and 'R' is the respondent,
or person being interviewed:
We hope you enjoy these 'snippets' of Langdale life

out for the next set of extracts which includes a rare interview
with a man who recalls coming to Langdale during the second world
war as a little boy with his family, who were Jewish refugees.
They all lived and worked at the Pillar Hotel on the Langdale
Estate where life as a child was fairly exciting - with US
troops and gun emplacements round the schoolyard at Chapel Stile!
