I. Did they ever eat
bracken, did anyone ever eat it?
R. No. I remember having to go and
gather it for Easter Pudding.
I. Where do you find these?
R. Oh there's plenty if you went
up to Wilson's place behind the Hall, there's stacks of Easter
leaves.
I. Are they in damp places?
R. Sort of, yes, and then you'd have
nettles
I. What were Easter ledges? Something
like a dock?
R. Yes something but then with a
finer leaf. like a dock, smaller leaf but finer. If you ever went
to Wilson Place and straight up from the house, there should be
a whole big bed of them Easter ledges there.
I. What did you do with them?
R. Oh you boiled them up, it was
made up into a pudding, Easter ledge pudding. There was ledges
and nettles and various things you know - that was growing out
you see; dandelions.
I. Why did they use them, was it
meant to be -?
R. Yes, it was a pudding, an Easter
ledge Pudding, you ate it with your vegetables - as a vegetable.
I. Did you do that because it was
traditional, or because your mother thought it was good for you,
or because it was free vegetables or what?
R. Well you did it, same as you always
had to have brimstone treacle in the spring, all the old fashioned
remedies, same as Easter ledges was old fashioned, and brimstone
treacle always in spring you had to have brimstone treacle.
I. Everybody?
R. Yes if they thought anything of
their health. That means everybody but the doctor.
I. Grown-ups and children?
R. Yes. everybody had to have brimstone
treacle, to clear the blood, I think that's why people kept so
healthy, they were natural foods really.
I. Easter ledges were regarded as
-
R. They were at Easter, yes. I can
remember that, though I've never made one, my mother always used
to make it, but I've never made one.
I. You've eaten it?
R. Yes.
I. Had it gone out in your day?
R. Must have done, `cos nobody uses
it anywhere I don't suppose today, unless it was someone who had
gone through college and knew all about these things you see -
I. But nettles you said - young nettles
-
R. Aye there was nettles, just pick
your nettles with the ledges,
I. What else besides those things?
R. Oh I can't remember now what we
had to gather.
I. Dandelions?
R. Yes there'd be dandelions, because
dandelions are not poisonous you know.
